BIG PHARMA: Creates Customers, Not Cures | Conspiracy Theories

Mar. 1, 2013 — Drug companies spent nearly $84 million marketing pharmaceuticals in the District of Columbia in 2011, including an outlay of nearly $19 million for gifts given to physicians, hospitals and other health care providers, according to a report by researchers at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS). The report notes that 12 physicians in the District received gifts (including consulting payments) that totaled more than $100,000 apiece that one year alone.
"There is nothing inherently wrong with such gifts," said Susan F. Wood, PhD, lead researcher and an associate professor of health policy and of environmental and occupational health at SPHHS. "However, this report draws attention to the amount being spent on marketing drugs and raises questions about whether some heavily marketed drugs may be prescribed more extensively than is appropriate."

The report fulfills the requirement of a 2004 law in the District of Columbia that requires all pharmaceutical companies to file annual reports describing their prescription-drug marketing activities in the District. The AccessRx Act also requires analysis of these reports to determine how pharmaceutical marketing may affect healthcare services in the District.

In fact, a previous study by Wood and her colleagues showed that drug companies making antipsychotic drugs gave a disproportionate amount of gifts and payments to District psychiatrists who treat Medicaid patients. Close ties between the drug companies and psychiatrists might have led to inappropriate prescribing for Medicaid patients, and particularly for children, according to D.C. Council Member David Catania, who held a hearing on the issue last November.

"Antipsychotics are often prescribed to children who are not in fact psychotic but have behavioral problems," said Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, a co-author on both reports and an associate professor of pharmacology and physiology at Georgetown University Medical Center. "These powerful drugs also act as sedatives and might lead to less disruptive behavior, but at what cost?" Antipsychotics are also associated with health problems including obesity and Type II diabetes, she said.

The current report doesn't single out specific drugs or name any doctors or other providers but it does give an overview of the money that drug companies spent on marketing their products in the District. The report notes that drug companies spent a total of $83.7 million for advertising, gifts and aggregate expenses in 2011 -- slightly less than 2010. Still, the report found that a small number of companies -- 23 out of 158 -- reported marketing expenditures of more than $1 million apiece. "That is an astonishing amount of money being spent on marketing prescription drugs in the District," said Wood.

The report also found that 22 percent of total marketing expenditures, or $18.9 million, went to "gifts" -- a category that included grants, speaker's fees and food. Drug companies may treat a select group of doctors to dinner and a sales pitch at a local restaurant, as well as provide delivered meals to medical practices, Wood said.

Hospitals, clinics and other organizations received gifts totaling $9.7 million, and individuals received $9.2 million. Some nurses and pharmacists received gifts in 2011 but most of the pharmaceutical company largesse, nearly 82 percent went to doctors. Most gifts to doctors were described by the drug companies as speaking fees and were paid in the form of cash or checks, the report said.

Other findings of the report include:

  • Out of nearly 3,400 physicians in the District who received at least one food gift, 444 received ten or more meals from pharmaceutical companies during 2011 and 33 physicians got 52 or more of these food gifts. This finding suggests some physicians are dining with drug reps on a weekly basis.
  • The top ten professional organizations (representing health professionals in a specific specialty or demographic group) received a total of $3.5 million, with half of those gifts valued at $20,000 or more.
  • The top ten Disease-Specific Organizations based in the District received $2.1 million in gifts such as cash or checks from drug companies. These organizations often represent and advise patients, and the concern is that large gifts could sway such groups to favor or recommend the company's products, the report said.
The report, which was commissioned by the Department of Health (DOH) in the District of Columbia, notes that under the Affordable Care Act pharmaceutical companies will begin publicly reporting gifts to physicians and teaching hospitals in September 2014. At that time, the authors say that the District could publicly release the names of all gift recipients, a step that would allow patients to have information about the financial relationship between drug companies and all of their health care providers.

Cannabis Nation | Weed Country| Mike Boutin

Article Clip:

Mike Boutin,
Host of Cannabis Nation Radio has 35 years of Cannabis use, offering a unique perspective and an epiphany that many will never experience!  Mike Boutin is a highly qualified, passionate advocate and host, often having his views on marijuana printed in the local paper.  In 2008 Mike was invited to be a member of the Trinity County Ad hoc Medical Cannabis Committee, and has worked on medical marijuana issues in the County since.  A year later the same Trinity County Sheriff's Dept. was asked for a reference to a "legal" and best practices "Farm" for an interview by the Los Angeles Times.  They were happy to point to Grace Farm's, a medical marijuana collective in the heart of the Emerald Triangle, ran by Mike Boutin and his wife Tawni. Mike is an active participant in his community who enjoys his occasional visits to Alpen Cellars, also located in the heart of the Emerald Triangle.

Julie Rose
Julie Rose, Co-Host of Cannabis Nation Radio offers a knowledgeable feminine contrast to Mike Boutin. Julie's business background includes a passion for research.  Growing up in a conservative upper mid-west city, marijuana was widely available, and commonly used.  As her work expanded her travel, she met many people from all walks of life, and found the same to be true nationwide. Julie believes the aggressive enforcement of a commonly available non-toxic plant is wrong. After learning about the extensive medicinal benefits, patients receiving free monthly tins of 300 pre-rolled joints from the federal government, and the U.S. Dept. of Health patent, she felt it was time to educate others. Julie Rose and Mike Boutin both feel no patient should ever face jail time for using cannabis to treat health problems, and cannabis should be available to adults for social use as well as nutritional preventive care, as in its fresh raw form it shows enormous potential as a powerful antioxidant without psychoactive effects, when eaten and juiced.
The war on Cannabis and the people who use it is immoral and unjust. It is time for an honest conversation about Marijuana that will help lead the way to ending prohibition of all Cannabis. Cannabis Nation Radio's primary mission is to educate through conversation, giving listeners a platform where they can call-in to discuss local issues relating to marijuana, and learn what others are doing to repeal laws that turn farmers, patients, and ordinary citizens into criminals.  You are not alone.  Listen to Mike Boutin and Julie Rose on Cannabis Nation Radio.

State assemblyman who voted against medical marijuana busted on pot charge   - NY Daily News

State assemblyman who voted against medical marijuana busted on pot charge   - NY Daily News

clip from article:
An outspoken state assemblyman who serves on the chamber's Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee — and voted against medical marijuana — has been busted for possessing pot, state police said Friday.
Assemblyman Steve Katz, 59, a conservative Republican from the Hudson Valley, was pulled over on the state Thruway for going 80 miles an hour  in a 65 mph zone when a trooper detected a “slight odor” of marijuana, state police spokesman Sgt. Don Baker said.
The trooper asked Katz if there was any pot in the car - and the assemblyman said “yes” and handed over a small bag that contained less than 25 grams, Baker said.
The trooper did not see evidence that Katz was driving while impaired so he ticketed him for unlawful possession of marijuana, a noncriminal violation, and speeding — and let him drive off, Baker said. Katz was heading to Albany at the time.
“If there was a concern that he was smoking while driving, we would have brought in a drug recognition expert to determine if he was under the influence, but there was no indication that he was,” Baker said.
Katz — due to appear in Coeymans Town Court on March 28 — declared in a written statement Friday afternoon that he would not let the "unfortunate incident ... impede my public service.”
“This should not overshadow the work I have done over the years for the public and my constituency,” he said. “I am confident that once the facts are presented that this will quickly be put to rest."

A one-ounce bag of medicinal marijuana.

As as assemblyman, Katz last year voted against a bill to legalize medicinal marijuana.
In a mailer to his constituents, he talked about how “our community has been stricken with an increase in drug use and drunk driving by our youngest citizens.”
And on March 8, he put out a statement decrying his community’s “struggle against illegal drug culture and the abuse of narcotics.”
Katz has been outspoken about the bad-boy culture of Albany. In January, he criticized Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for his handling of the sexual harassment complaints against Assemblyman Vito Lopez (D-Brooklyn).
Katz — a vetererinarian, from Putnam County — has had his own controversies. He has been arrested two times on charges related to his veterinarian practice, including the illegal dumping of the body of a dead dog. He was never convicted.
Brooklyn Sen. Martin Golden, a fellow Republican, called it “hypocritical” for Katz to have voted against pot legislation and then get charged with possession.
“Be true to yourself,” said Golden, who sees pot as a gateway drug. “If you like marijuana and smoke marijuana, at least vote for it.”

Toke Signals with Steve Elliott | Worth Repeating: It’s Official! Cannabinoids Kill All Types of Cancer
. – I have never tried anything related to drugs myself, but still what is told here about marijuana is so dramatic that I could not resist publishing it. The UK company GW Pharmaceuticals has received the medical patent covering all plant-based phytocannabinoids, for use in the treatment and prevention of basically all forms of human cancer.

I could choose to make a long article about this or I could let the article by Steve Elliott, linked above speak for itself. Even though I have been against drugs I decided to let Elliott share his knowledge, even here on State of Globe. The reason is simple. My whole life I have spoken out against drugs, but I have at the same time read article upon article and seen videos about the alleged healing powers of marijuana in particular. At the same time I have seen that the pharmaceutical industry has a long story of fighting alternatives to their patented and usually very costly solutions. A year or so ago I also saw that chemotherapy used against cancer is found to spread the cancer, even though it may kill the main tumor. The whole concept of fighting cancer has a growing credibility problem.

Some want it on list of allowed conditions
Hartford - A combination of Percocet, Oxycontin, Vicodin and a number of other drugs made Robert Specht of Hamden a "puddle" in bed for five years. He had been prescribed the narcotics to help recover from a foot surgery.
But it wasn't until he got off the narcotics and began using cannabis, or marijuana, that he could once again function.
On Monday, Specht told members of the General Assembly's Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee that he believes that pain should be added to the list of qualifying conditions for the state's medical marijuana program.
He was testifying in support of Senate Bill 1117, which proposes to include "pain that is treated by a pain management specialist" as one of the debilitating medical conditions that can be treated with medical marijuana. The bill also proposes taxing producers $250 for each pound of marijuana delivered to a dispensary.
Both supporters and opponents of the bill made passionate arguments about whether to include "pain" as a debilitating medical condition that deserved medical marijuana.

PTSD Nightmare Cure by VietnamVet1968

PTSD Nightmare Cure by VietnamVet1968

clip from article:
Marijuana is a PTSD nightmare cure. At least in my case, and among a group of people I know who suffer from PTSD nightmares.
I have searched quite a bit, and as far as I can discern, the fact that marijuana can stop PTSD nightmares in their tracks is NOT generally known. This really must be corrected because there are, no doubt, millions of people out there, police, fire, military, and just the general population, who wake up every night from recurring nightmares, and they don’t know that marijuana would stop these traumatic dreams completely.
I have been trying to think of a way to get the word out to the public on the use of marijuana to stop PTSD nightmares, and this looks like a good place to try.
My story: I am a Vietnam veteran who served in Vietnam in 1968/1969. After I had been there almost a year, I was involved in an attack by the Viet Cong on the Marine Combat Base at Phu Bai, South Vietnam. It is not necessary to go into detail, just know that I thought I was about to be killed and went through all the trauma that this kind of thing can do to a person.
I obviously survived, and went on about my business, and then about two or three weeks after the incident, I started reliving this traumatic event every night in horrible nightmares. I didn’t think too much about it at the time. I thought this kind of thing was probably normal for someone who experiences such shocks to the mind. But as time went on, the constant nightmares really became debilitating.
Then, I was introduced to Vietnamese marijuana. And the nightmares quit. I still did not think much about it, thinking the nightmares had probably run their course, and did not connect the stopping of my nightmares with smoking marijuana.
I smoked marijuana steadily for a few years after that, and then decided to quit because I was trying to get a job that required a drug test. After I quit smoking, within just a week maybe two, my PTSD nightmares were back full-blown! It was like they never had stopped. It was really quite disturbing to realize that something inside me was causing me this kind of distress even these many years later.
I still did not connect the marijuana with having anything to do with my nightmares.

HIGHTIMES.COM | Pot in the NFL

HIGHTIMES.COM | Pot in the NFL

CLIP FROM ARTICLE:

We already know that pot is nonaddictive. With the evidence mounting that it can aid recovery from brain injury – and provide highly effective stress relief – it’s time to let medical marijuana take the field.

By Samantha Nicholas

It happens a few times each NFL season: During a game, a violent collision occurs. Play stops, the fans go quiet, medical personnel gather around the fallen player and TV announcers become deadly serious. Usually they say something like, “This puts it all in perspective.”

Puts what in perspective? That pro football players are bigger and faster than ever? That when they collide, the results are frightening? Here’s some perspective: The kinetic energy generated by athletes of this size and speed has out-distanced the ability of the human body to withstand traumatic injury.

Certainly, it’s nothing that the National Football League is unaware of. Last June, more than 2,000 former players filed a lawsuit that could potentially cost the league billions. The suit claims that the NFL hid information that linked football-related head trauma to permanent brain injuries. Thousands of former players state that the head trauma they sustained as players has diminished their quality of life, with effects including (but not limited to) chronic physical pain, depression, dementia and suicide.
The underlying truth of the lawsuit is that the key to winning in the NFL is keeping your players on the field.... [ READ MORE AT LINK]

Smell the Truth » Opinion: Could Marijuana Save Professional Football?

clip from article: The biggest lawsuit in sports history was filed by 2,138 former National Football League players on June 7 in federal court, charging that the NFL has “turned a blind eye to the risk” of repeated head injuries and was guilty of “mythologizing and glorifying violence through the media including its NFL Films division.”
The players and their families claim that the serious health ramifications of continual blows to the head, which are integral to the sport, were hidden and that the NFL “generated false findings” to that end. The lawsuit also includes helmet maker Riddel. The players are seeking unspecified compensation for the care and treatment of neurological conditions associated with brain trauma.
The players claim that they expected injuries as a part of playing the game, but what they didn’t expect was that they would prematurely descend into the kind of dementia and mental deterioration that usually strikes much older people. The gravity of the situation was brought to public attention by the recent suicides of three former NFL players who were suffering from ailments similar to those associated with Alzheimer’s or other neurological diseases. In February of last year, All-Pro defensive back Dave Duerson shot himself in the chest and requested in his suicide note that his brain be studied for damage.
Dr. Ann McKee, a neurologist studying brain trauma in Bedford, Massachusetts examined Duerson’s brain and determined that he “had classic pathology of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and no evidence of any other disease.” McKee found that the repeated blows to the head experienced by football players accelerate mental decline by creating a protein that accumulates in brain cells, disabling and eventually destroying them. The symptoms of CTE resemble those of Alzheimer’s disease—personality changes, irritability and irrational behavior that progress to dementia. Bedford says that she has seen some level of CTE in every football player she has examined. Former NFL players report suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s or other memory-impairment diseases at a rate five times higher than that of the national average for their age group.
With all the attention now focused on the terrible toll that professional football takes on the human brain, a curious and perhaps provocative question needs to be posed to NFL administrators and officials: Could marijuana help?
At first glance the question seems flippant and irrelevant, but when one looks at the evidence from a growing body of science involving the study of plant cannabinoids—the compounds found only in cannabis—the idea of using marijuana to treat and possibly repair the injured brains of athletes seems plausible. Researchers from around the world have found that THC, CBD and other cannabinoids have remarkable neuroprotective properties and also trigger the brains repair mechanism to generate new cells.
Research published as far back as 1998 found that “Cannabidiol (CBD) and THC were shown to prevent hydroperoxide-induced oxidative damage as well as or better than other antioxidants…” and that CBD was more effective for protecting the brain from damage resulting from injury than the antioxidants Vitamin C or E. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, the Israeli researcher who first identified THC as the euphoric agent in marijuana said that “the endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-AG, as well as some plant and synthetic cannabinoids have neuroprotective effects following brain injury.” Another study, carried out at Michigan State University found that after 48 hours of treatment, THC significantly reduced tau deposits in the brain.
One of the plaintiffs in the NFL suit is Kevin Turner, 42, a former Philadelphia Eagles running back who is stricken with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which he blames on repeated head blows. It is of course possible that Turner, like Gehrig, might have developed ALS if he had played baseball and not suffered the head injuries..[ read more at link]

An overview

Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, University of Salerno

Abstract. Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant
properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new
found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and
prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such
as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as
neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage
following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the
treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s

"More Danish cannabis users are beginning to grow their own plants at home, a new report has shown. The news comes via a recent survey conducted by Helle Dahl from the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research at Ã…rhus University. Dahl said in her report that at least 1,200 households in Denmark are now growing cannabis for private consumption, but she added that many are using the plants for medical reasons rather than just recreation."

PLOS ONE: Role of Endocannabinoids and Cannabinoid-1 Receptors in Cerebrocortical Blood Flow Regulation

"n conclusion, our study indicates that under resting physiological conditions CB1-receptor mediated mechanisms have limited tonic influence on the systemic and cerebral circulation. In agreement with previous studies investigating the systemic effects of intravenous administration of anandamide (reviewed in [4], [98]), we found that acute enhancement of EC levels by inhibition of cannabinoid cellular reuptake leads to transient increase of blood pressure followed by more sustained hypotension, as well as to suppression of the respiration; and that these responses, except for the initial hypertension, are mediated by CB1-receptors. Most importantly, our data suggest that the EC system and CB1-receptors play an important role in the regulation of the cerebral circulation during hypoxia and hypercapnia and may potentially be involved in the autoregulation of CBF."

Abstract

The endocannabinoid system has been shown to mediate beneficial effects on gastrointestinal inflammation via cannabinoid receptors 1 (CB1) and 2 (CB2). These receptors have also been reported to activate the MAP kinases p38 and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK), which are involved in early acinar events leading to acute pancreatitis and induction of proinflammatory cytokines. Our aim was to examine the role of cannabinoid receptor activation in an experimental model of acute pancreatitis and the potential involvement of MAP kinases. Cerulein pancreatitis was induced in wild-type, CB1−/−, and MK2−/− mice pretreated with selective cannabinoid receptor agonists or antagonists. Severity of pancreatitis was determined by serum amylase and IL-6 levels, intracellular activation of pancreatic trypsinogen, lung myeloperoxidase activity, pancreatic edema, and histological examinations. Pancreatic lysates were investigated by Western blotting using phospho-specific antibodies against p38 and JNK. Quantitative PCR data, Western blotting experiments, and immunohistochemistry clearly show that CB1 and CB2 are expressed in mouse pancreatic acini. During acute pancreatitis, an upregulation especially of CB2 on apoptotic cells occurred. The unselective CB1/CB2 agonist HU210 ameliorated pancreatitis in wild-type and CB1−/− mice, indicating that this effect is mediated by CB2. Furthermore, blockade of CB2, not CB1, with selective antagonists engraved pathology. Stimulation with a selective CB2 agonist attenuated acute pancreatitis and an increased activation of p38 was observed in the acini. With use of MK2−/− mice, it could be demonstrated that this attenuation is dependent on MK2. Hence, using the MK2−/− mouse model we reveal a novel CB2-activated and MAP kinase-dependent pathway that modulates cytokine expression and reduces pancreatic injury and affiliated complications.

Steph Sherer: You Have Cancer; Go to Congress -- The Battle for Safe Access to Medical Marijuana

clip from article: Most Americans see the battle of medical cannabis (marijuana) from a distance as a ping-pong game of excuses from the federal government to deny patients and doctors access to cannabis for therapeutic use. Eighty-three percent of Americans say the federal government should move past its archaic rhetoric about cannabis, and as Obama's 2012 campaign promised, Move Forward.
But for millions of Americans, issues surrounding medical cannabis are more than a political game: it affects their daily lives. A million Americans are currently using physician-recommended medical cannabis legally under their state laws. Despite following state law, they still have to worry about federal agents closing down their source of access or about losing their jobs and/or benefits. Millions more are turning to the illicit market because their states have not yet created programs due to conflicts with federal laws. As a result, millions of patients are being hindered and denied adequate health care.[ read more at link]

The Healing Power of Marijuana Has Barely Been Tapped | Cannabis Culture

The Healing Power of Marijuana Has Barely Been Tapped | Cannabis Culture

clip from article: There are now legal medical cannabis programs in 18 states plus Washington, DC, with pot fully legal for adults in two other states. Ironically, however, the actual healing power of the plant has barely been tapped. Smoking marijuana with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), or better, vaporizing it (using a device to bake the plant material and inhale the active ingredients), has an indisputably palliative effect and can be medically useful for pain relief, calming and appetite stimulation. It already has confirmed benefits against glaucoma, epilepsy and other specific diseases and disorders. It also gets people high. THC triggers cannabinoid receptors in the brain and this produces the sensation of being stoned. These receptors are found in the parts of the brain linked to pleasure, memory, concentration, and time perception.
But, based mostly on research overseas there is an increasing consensus that the medicinal benefits of psychoactive THC pale in comparison to the non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) from the leaves of the same plant--raw and unheated. Depending on the strain, some plants are high in CBD but also contain a lesser amount of THC which is said to enhance the healing potentiality. CBD does not make people feel “stoned” and actually counters some of the effects of THC (for example, suppressing the appetite vs. stimulating it). CBD is beginning to be recognized by researchers at mainstream medical institutions around the world as a potentially very powerful weapon against cancer.
Researchers Sean D. McAllister and Pierre Desprez, who conducted studies of CBD's effect on cancer cells for California Pacific Medical Center, suggest that these non-psychoactive compounds from the cannabis plant might, in short order, render chemotherapy and radiation distant second and third options for cancer patients. Based on a more recent study, McAllister and Desprez feel that CBD's "could stop breast cancer from spreading." [ read more at link]

Petition | High Times Medical Canniabus Cup VIP Tickets No Handicap Information Civil Rights Violation | Change.org

clipped from article:
High Times Magazine has violated my CIVIL RIGHTS, by not having handicap information readily available, before an event.
To:
ACLU
High Times Medical Canniabus Cup, Matt Stang & High Times Can Cup Denver 2013
Us Dept Of Justice, Civil Rights
I have emailed and called Red Rocks and High Times, about getting wheelchair access to Red Rocks for the Medical Cannabis Cup on April 20, 2013.
I have tried to get someone at High Times and Red Rocks, to work with my wife and me so that we can get VIP tickets to no avail.
We always had to call ahead to get information for concerts. We have to make sure they have wheelchair access. I always do this because many times we have been turned away from concerts after purchasing, traveling and do not attend the concert because there is no handicap access. This is why we tried so hard to get this information.
We tried looking everywhere to get information on handicap access and it is not readility available at the High times website, or the place to purchase your tickets. My wife called the New York office of High Times Magazine. She spoke with a secretary who directed her to an answering machine, she left a message about the information we needed but felt like that was not enough. She called back and was connected to Matt Stang, the Senior Advertising Representative at High Times Magazine. She explained our situation and asked Mr. Stang what to do about this matter. Mr. Matt Stang, laughingly, said "You don’t get any special treatment just because you are in a wheelchair, the Endo Center is wheelchair accessible but Red Rocks has never been accessible and you will never get in there." We were both shocked and saddened. She call back and spoke with the secretary and explained how she was treated, the secretary did not seem surprised.
I and emailed and left a message at Red Rocks, they got back to me the next day. They explained in an email that they are wheelchair and handicap accessible, but that I needed to tell Ticket Master when I bought my tickets; I was in need of wheelchair seating for the concert. The only problem with this is that the tickets were not being sold by Ticket Master but through High Times.
So, we were kind of confused, about what to do to getting seating for my wife and I and time was running out on buying these tickets. The next day the VIP tickets were sold out.
We just wanted to be able to purchase tickets to the VIP Denver Cannabis Cup and have Red Rocks and High Times, communicate so that we could be there and have wheelchair seating. How can this be so unorganized? My wife is ill and wants to attend and needs to attend this year, like others because it is a Medical Cannabis Cup. Why do they not provide more information to handicap people about accommodations? It makes me sick and my wife does not feel normal because we can’t order tickets like everyone else, because we don’t know if we will have a seat at Red Rocks. It is really not fair to people and I believe we have laws about this too!! We are just two people; we have met so many people who give up, because they can’t fight anymore. Well we have just started, fighting for the handicap. We would really appreciate your support in signing our petition. In signing this you are helping the rights of all handicap people everywhere.
Always with peace and love, [Please sign petition at link! Thank you much! ]

What if Cannabis Cured Cancer Part 2

Inhibition of tumor angiogenesis by cannabinoids

Inhibition of tumor angiogenesis by cannabinoids

Cannabinoids, the active components of marijuana and their derivatives, inhibit tumor growth in animal models, but the mechanism of their anti-tumoral action in vivo is still unclear. Because the generation of a new vascular supply (angiogenesis) is causally involved in the progression of the majority of solid tumors, the aim of this study was to test whether cannabinoids inhibit tumor angiogenesis.

PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

1. Cannabinoid administration inhibits tumor angiogenesis

We induced malignant tumors in immune-deficient mice by subcutaneous flank inoculation of rat C6 glioma cells or human grade IV astrocytoma cells and injected them for 8 days with vehicle or the nonpsychoactive CB2 cannabinoid agonist JWH-133 at 50 μg/day. We found that tumors from cannabinoid-treated animals were smaller and paler than controls (Fig. 1 A, B). Analysis of the vasculature by immunostaining of CD31, an endothelial cell marker, revealed no significant effect of JWH-133 on microvascular count (number of blood vessels per unit area) in the tumors (data not shown). However, cannabinoid administration turned the microvascular hyperplasia of control tumors (Fig. 1C, E ) to a pattern of blood vessels characterized predominantly by very small and narrow capillaries (Fig. 1D, F ). Moreover, whereas control tumors showed a fractionated immunostaining of smooth muscle α-actin (SMA) (Fig. 1G ), a smooth muscle cell and pericyte marker, in cannabinoid-treated tumors SMA-positive cells had a mature appearance and remained closely investing the endothelial wall (Fig. 1H ). We next examined whether these changes in tumor vascularization led to actual differences in vascular functionality as assessed by a vascular permeability assay. Tumor-bearing animals were anesthetized and Evans blue (1% in PBS, 100 μL/mouse) …

Cannabinoids and the Digestive Tract - Springer

In the digestive tract there is evidence for the presence of high levels of endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol) and enzymes involved in the synthesis and metabolism of endocannabinoids. Immunohistochemical studies have shown the presence of CB1 receptors on myenteric and submucosal nerve plexuses along the alimentary tract. Pharmacological studies have shown that activation of CB1 receptors produces relaxation of the lower oesophageal sphincter, inhibition of gastric motility and acid secretion, as well as intestinal motility and secretion. In general, CB1-induced inhibition of intestinal motility and secretion is due to reduced acetylcholine release from enteric nerves. Conversely, endocannabinoids stimulate intestinal primary sensory neurons via the vanilloid VR1 receptor, resulting in enteritis and enhanced motility. The endogenous cannabinoid system has been found to be involved in the physiological control of colonic motility and in some pathophysiological states, including paralytic ileus, intestinal inflammation and cholera toxin-induced diarrhoea. Cannabinoids also possess antiemetic effects mediated by activation of central and peripheral CB1 receptors. Pharmacological modulation of the endogenous cannabinoid system could provide a new therapeutic target for the treatment of a number of gastrointestinal diseases, including nausea and vomiting, gastric ulcers, secretory diarrhoea, paralytic ileus, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer and gastro-oesophageal reflux conditions.

Ganjanomics: bringing Humboldt's shadow economy into the light — High Country News

clip from article:
One evening last October, I met with Anna Hamilton in the Northern California town of Garberville. A singer-songwriter with a barbwire voice, Hamilton is known locally for her radio show, Rant and Rave, Lock and Load and Shoot Your Mouth Off -- which, it turns out, is a pretty good description of her approach to life.
"I'm a little gutterballer from the beach," she said. "And I get nervous around too much normalcy."
We sat by the front window in a bar called the Blue Room, shielding our eyes from the sun while a pair of hippies attempted to maneuver their minivan into a parking space. As a dreadlocked woman passenger gently upbraided him, the scrawny, bearded kid behind the wheel struggled to line up between the two white lines on the pavement. The entire operation seemed to unfold in slow-mo. Hamilton watched in disbelief.
"Don't let anybody tell you," she growled, "that pot makes you a better driver."
The hippies were among a wave of migrants that appear each fall to help with the harvest. And on those still-warm October days, Garberville and its neighbor, Redway, a couple miles down the road, felt like the forward operations base for a hard-core gardening cult. Citizens stormed local garden centers, loading up last-minute supplies and hauling them over a tangle of dirt roads into the surrounding hills.
Out in that wild country, concealed behind private gates in the draws and gulches that lace the rumpled landscape, lies the heart of what may be the biggest false-fronted economy in the United States. California produces nearly 40 percent of the country's marijuana; worth an estimated $13.8 billion, it is by far the state's biggest cash crop. The longtime hub of the business is here, in Humboldt and neighboring Mendocino and Trinity counties -- the legendary Emerald Triangle.
Despite the drug economy's pervasiveness, locals observe a kind of winking discretion that goes back four decades, when the hill culture first retreated from the reach of authority. As one grower put it, "We all are keeping each other's secrets, and there is kind of a community because of that."

Can cannabinoids treat osteoporosis? | MediCann

Can cannabinoids treat osteoporosis? | MediCann

Scientists have found that the body’s natural endocannabinoid system plays a role in bone metabolism.  The endocannabinoid system also plays a well-recognized role in regulating many other physiologic processes, including neurotransmission, pain perception, energy balance, appetite control, motor function, and the immune response.
Bone is a type of specialized connective tissue, it is full of cells, and it is very metabolically active.  Bone is continually undergoing a process of renewal and repair known as “bone remodeling.”  Bone forming cells are known as osteoblasts, and bone resorbing cells are known as osteoclasts.
Through early adulthood, the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts is balanced.  As a result, a healthy bone mass is maintained.

Osteoporosis is a metabolic disorder characterized by osteoclast activity (bone resorption) exceeding osteoblast activity (bone formation).   This leads to gradual deterioration of bone mass, increased bone fragility, and increased fracture risk.  Osteoporotic fractures are one of the main causes of morbidity among elderly patients.

The medical literature shows that cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors may play important roles in the development of treatments for bone diseases such as osteoporosis.  Here are some highlights:
  • CB1 cannabinoid receptors are present primarily in skeletal sympathetic nerve terminals that regulate bone formation.  How CB1 receptors control bone turnover remains to be determined; a neuronal mechanism is speculated.
  • CB2 cannabinoid receptors are located in osteoblasts and osteoclasts.  CB2 receptors have been found to stimulate bone formation and inhibit bone resorption (thus a “bone building effect”).
  • In the aging skeleton, CB1 and CB2 receptors have been found to have a protective effect against age-dependent bone loss in male and female mice.
  • CB1 receptor deficiency in aged mice results in accelerated age-dependent osteoporosis due to increased bone resorption and decreased bone formation.
  • CB2 receptor deficient mice had accelerated bone loss due to enhanced bone turnover.
  • In humans, abnormalities of the CB2 receptor gene are strongly associated with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Taken together, these reports on cannabinoid receptors in tissue cultures, mice, and humans pave the way for additional research to study the potential development of cannabinoid-based medications to combat osteoporosis.
